Thrive Powder Laundry Detergent in Lavender Review | Eco-Friendly Laundry Detergent Powder
The Top Line:
Yes, Thrive Market Powder Laundry Detergent is a BUY. SLS-free, dye-free, PVA-free, fragrance-free option: this eco-friendly detergent powder is one of the best options. Clothes smell fresh, and come out clean. Thrive is also a B-Corporation (love this). Drawbacks include membership fees as well as plastic bag, which we hope gets resolved over time. Overall, we enjoyed this laundry detergent powder.
Note: We also reviewed Thrive’s Dishwasher Powder.
Note Two: We did a Thrive Market HAUL roundup here.
The Breakdown:
Cost & Products: $12.79 $8.99 for 42oz or 70 normal loads.
How ‘Clean’ Is This? Pretty clean! of the listed ingredients, none seem to be bad. The only one that raises some yellow flags is the mysterious “enzyme” ingredient. Some enzymes are not a cause for concern while others have some cause for concern.
Packaging: Thin plastic zip bag
Purchasing & Shipping: Thrive works on a membership basis, with free shipping over $49. Website is relatively easy to navigate.
Good to know: The Laundry detergent comes in a Peppermint and Fragrance-Free option!
Note: Thrive Market is a B-Corporation. We at the Reduce Report LOVE B-Corporations. Read more about b-corporations here. Normal corporations have a goal to make more money for their owners. B-Corps do that too, but they also set specific, social and ethical goals such as governance, environment, and workers.
Also - Thrive Market has a membership fee. We did not include that in our calculation in this article. The cost is $59.95 per year or $9.95 if you decide to participate only on a monthly basis.
What’s Your Impact? Much fewer questionable ingredients compared to the standard Laundry detergents. Plus Powdered Laundry detergents means there is no PVA.
The Good:
✔ Natural, eco-friendly ingredients
✔ SLS-free, phthalate-free
✔ Dye-free and color-additive-free
✔ Thrive Market is a B-Corporation
✔ Clothes come out clean and smelling fresh
✔ There is a fragrance-free laundry detergent powder option
✔ PVA-free
✔ Cost is near the rock bottom! [Did not include the cost of membership]
The Bad:
✗ Membership fee
✗ Plastic Bag packaging
The Experience
Context: We have been trying all kinds of zero-waste, eco-friendly laundry detergents. We have been trying Pods, Packs, Sheets, as well as the trusty laundry powder. We’ve been using Thrive Market Laundry Detergent Powder for all kinds of clothes, towels, sheets — you name it.
Lovely light scent — Lavender.
Powder dissolves all the way, even in cold.
Clothes come out clean and smelling fresh.
We know powder gets lost if you put it in a cardboard box, but we also don’t love the plastic zip bag option
The Cost
Context: We assumed that the average household of 4 will generate 7 loads of laundry per week or 365 loads per year! We will compare Thrive Market Laundry Detergent Powder to a long list of other detergents like Meliora, Charlie’s, Cleancult, Dropps, and Sheets Laundry Club, as well as more common drugstore brands like Seventh Generation, Tide, Persil, and Meyers Laundry Detergent. Note that we did not include the cost of membership here.
Money Report: Wow! Thrive Market Laundry Detergent Powder (at the sale price of $8.99!) competes with Meliora on annual basis.

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
