Give a Sh!t 100% Compostable Dog Poo Bags Review | Vegetable Based Biodegradable Zero-Waste Dog Waste Bags

The Top Line: We like Give a Sh!t a lot, but not currently our top choice for a compostable dog waste bag given the price.

Overall, we loved the design and brand — the product is clearly premium, thick, easy to open bags, and actually compostable! But at almost $80 a year per dog, Give a Sh!t compostable dog poop bags are definitely one of the most expensive options.

The Breakdown:

  • Cost & Products: $12.99 for 120 bags

  • How ‘Clean’ Is This? The cleanest option there is for bagging your pup’s poop! Its made to be 100% compostable - vegetable-based (corn starch) and a much better option than the pseudo-'biodegradable’ options we see heavily marketed that aren’t actually compostable and will not fully degrade properly. All products are BPI & TÜV AUSTRIA Home Compost Certified to be of ASTM D6400 and EN 13432 standards!

  • Packaging: Comes in a recyclable cardboard box that’s made from recycled materials.

  • Purchasing & Shipping: We purchased on Amazon, but you can also purchase on the Give a Sh!t website.

  • Good to know: 10% of their profits go to animal protection charities

  • Coupons: None.

  • What’s Your Impact? Give a Sh!t dog poop bags are made from ethically sourced and carefully manufactured from 100% botanical plant components: cornstarch, BPAT (biodegradable and compostable polymer), and edible glycerin. We estimate that for each dog, we go through at least 730 dog waste bags a year — that is a lot of extra plastic bags out there!

The Experience

Context: We’ve got a 4 year old pup and have tried every dog poop bag under the sun. We were particularly frustrated to find out that our previous poop bags that were advertised as biodegradable were NOT actually very green!

Note: if you see EPI or Oxo-Biodegradable, it is NOT compostable and are still made of plastic — just plastic with a chemical on it to help it break down, and creates persistent micro-plastics that stay in the environment.

  • Easy to open (so key, especially for those in drier and colder climates!)

  • Sticker is easy to remove without damaging the bag

  • Thick material

  • No holes that we see

  • Large bag (great for those with larger dogs, but we have a small pup and would actually appreciate a smaller bag option for less waste!)

The Cost:

We estimate that for each dog, there might be 2 poops a day — so we go through at least 730 dog waste bags a year!

Money Report: Give a Sh!t dog poop bags are definitely on the more expensive side. However, worth noting that two of the less expensive options above (Eco-clean and Pets N Bags) are NOT actually compostable as they are made from EPI Oxo-degradable plastic.

The Good:

Beautiful, fun design and brand

Premium 100% compostable, corn starch based bags

Easy to open

No tears or holes when we unroll the bag

The Bad:

Pretty pricey!

Not really a complaint, but we wish there were smaller sized bags for our smaller pup (less waste)

Our Recommendation: We like Give a Sh!t a lot, but not our top choice for a compostable dog waste bag given the price.

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
