Blueland Powder Dish Soap Review 2020 Report | Zero Waste Dish Washing Powder

Blueland Powder Dish Soap Review 2020 Report | Zero Waste Dish Washing Powder

The Top Line:

Not a buy (on price!). Such a sad recommendation given how well the powder worked! Good ingredients, not drying on skin, fragrance-free, and great overall packaging for the zero waste conscious. But unless we figure out that the powder will last 4x longer than the same weight of liquid, we can’t recommend Blueland Powder Dish Soap, solely based on price.

We will keep using our set and if we feel that the powder lasts a really, really long time, we will update the pricing grid and switch our recommendation. OR maybe Blueland will reduce their price. :)

The Breakdown:

  • Cost & Products: (1) $20 for the Starter set, which includes the reusable Steel tin and 40 tablets; (2) $34 Dish Duo, which includes the Dish Soap starter set as well as the dishwasher tabs; and (3) $10 powder refill packs

  • How ‘Clean’ Is This? All ‘naturally-derived’ ingredients, which the Blueland website describes in detail

  • Packaging: Cardboard box for shipping, the silicone shaker was unwrapped, and compostable paper bag for the tablets

  • Purchasing & Shipping: Very easy shopping experience. Our package got stuck somewhere in shipping land and Blueland was able to ship us a new box to our new location.

  • Good to know: We LOVE that Blueland does not lock you into auto-refills like many of the other brands do.

Shipping is free with $35 purchase

  • Coupons: No coupons that we know of.

  • What’s Your Impact? Reduction in plastic - no plastic for dishwasher soaps or bottle full of heavy liquid. The refill powder comes in a paper bag.

The Experience

Context: After Dawn and Palmolive, we used Seventh Generation and Method for their green and natural ingredients.

  • First time using powder dish washer: positive experience with Blueland.

  • There is a pouch that you keep inside the powder dispenser which stops the powder from clumping (it absorbs excess moisture).

  • The silicone dispenser is interesting - we wish the spout was available on all sides. Right now, the powder only comes out of a slit on one side of the dispenser.

  • The dispenser itself is a bit large for our small hands.

  • BUT we like the silicone, which makes it easy to grab with our wet hands while washing dishes. So, we don’t really notice how bit it is.

  • We got better suds applying powder DIRECTLY to items (we never do that with liquid)

  • You only need a tiny, tiny, tiny amount to get wicked suds action on our pots and pans.

  • Grease removal was pretty darn good.

  • We used the powder with our Public Goods sponge, Kuchenprofi brush, and bare hands (yep). Success with all three, but best with the Kuchenprofi brush.

  • Not drying to hands!

  • No scent (we like that).

The Cost

We compared Blueland dish washing powder to drugstore brands Dawn and Palmolive to greener options like Seventh Generation, Method, No Tox Life, and (our current favorite) DuJardin French Utility Soap.

We are not sure how much longer powder will last when compared to liquid. To us, it seems like at least 2x as long, possibly much longer per oz. We calculated based on each 1oz of powder equaling 2oz of liquid dish soap.

Money Report: Yikes. Blueland’s dish powder is so much more expensive than any other option! The powder needs to last at least 4x more than liquid per ounce in order to make it competitive in terms of price.

The Good:

Soft on hands (non-drying)

Zero - waste

Non-toxic ingredients with a fragrance free formula

Mixed feeling on the silicone dispenser - we like that it’s silicone

Great suds to get our dishes really clean

No residue, rinses clean and cuts grease

The Bad:

Super pricey!

Small improvements on the silicone dispenser, like a touch smaller and a spout on both sides

Our Recommendation:

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
