Blueland Body Wash Review 2023 | Eco-friendly, zero-waste body soap
We tried Blueland’s Body Wash for 2 weeks, and here’s what we thought…
The Top Line: ITS A BUY (if you highly prefer liquid body soap over bar soaps). We love Blueland’s commitment to zero plastic and it stays consistent with their Body Wash— no plastic in packaging, no PVAs in the formula, no harmful ingredients. We also loved the scent and experience — the powder, when combined with water, becomes a creamy consistency, which was a lovely surprise. We like the scent and the ‘forever’ bottle that comes with the first purchase that we can reuse over and over again. Of course, the powder format also reduces carbon footprint from shipping — liquid is just so much heavier. Our only flag is that there are a couple of ingredients to read up more on if you have sensitive skin (though it appears Blueland has had the product reviewed by a dermatologist and 3rd party lab tested to show it is non-irritating. Finally, when it comes to cost, it is more cost effective than most ‘cleaner’ body wash and gels, though more expensive than bar soaps.
The Breakdown:
Cost & Products: $14.40 for 2 refill pouches every 3 months. Each pouch fills an 18 fl oz bottle. You can also 4 refill pouches as a one-time purchase for $28.80 ($7.20 per pouch).
How ‘Clean’ Is This? No harsh chemicals, harmful ingredients, VOCs or plastic packaging.
Packaging: The starter kit comes with a 18 fl oz bottle that you can refill. Refill pouches are compostable.
Purchasing & Shipping: We purchased on the Blueland website.
What’s Your Impact? Two people will likely use 8 bottles of body wash each year, so this helps to significantly reduce the number of plastic bottle waste (which, mostly does not actually get recycled, even if its recyclable plastic). The powder refills also save on carbon footprint, as liquid is just so much heavier to ship.
The Experience
Context: We love our bar soap (especially in our sisal soap holder that exfoliates like nothing else), but some in our household really prefer liquid body soap. We had to try Blueland’s Body Wash to see if it was a good option for us:
Combining the powder to make the body wash was incredible — it becomes this creamy soap that really feels luxurious! Not what we were expecting when we added the powder to water.
We love the feel of the soap on our skin, feels nourishing and hydrating
We appreciate the convenience and experience of a liquid body wash, and love that this is a much more eco-friendly option!
The Cost
We compared the cost of Blueland’s Body Wash with a number of mainstream and ‘greener’ body soap and body wash brands, such as Whole Foods Market brand, Fresh, Toms of Maine, Fresh, Method and more.
Money Report: Blueland’s Body Wash is reasonable when comparing it against liquid body soaps, less expensive than Method and Fresh, and a bit more expensive than Dove. However, it is definitely more expensive than bar soap.
The Good:
✔ Made without sulfates, parabens, ammonia, triclosan, phthalates, or VOCs.
✔ MADE SAFE® Certified base, Cradle to Cradle Certified™, Leaping Bunny Certified (Cruelty-Free)
✔ Vegan, gluten-free, soy and nut-free
✔ Unique powder to liquid formula that creates a very nourishing and creamy body wash
Things to consider:
✗ Includes Acacia Senegal Gum, which scores a 3 by EWG (‘moderate’ for Allergies & Immunotoxicity)
✗ Includes Tocopheryl Acetate, which scores a 2-3 by EWG (‘moderate’ for Allergies & Immunotoxicity)

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
