Who Gives a Crap Bamboo Toilet Paper Review 2024 | Sustainable, Eco-Friendly Toilet Paper

The Top Line:

BUY. Who Gives a Crap Bamboo Toilet Paper is a great alternative to traditional toilet paper. Bamboo regenerates more quickly and requires less resources than traditional TP. The cost is right on par with Quilted Northern, and even though it is not the cheapest normal toilet paper alternative, the rolls are decently sized. Did we mention that they were soft (a touch softer than Cloud Paper and How We Roll) and strong too (and zero pilling)? Big win.

[Update Jan 2024]: Given substantial price changes, we updated the comparison price grid in Toilet Paper.

The Breakdown:

  • Cost & Products: $52 for 48 rolls or $34 for 24 rolls. Subscriptions have a one-time discount of $10.

  • How ‘Clean’ Is This? 100% bamboo, which is cleaner than tree pulp since bamboo is relatively more easy to cultivate.

  • Packaging: Ships in a giant cardboard box. Each roll is individually wrapped.

  • Purchasing & Shipping: Straightforward purchasing on the Who Gives a Crap website. Free shipping on $25+.

  • Good to know: A whopping 50% of profits are donated to help build toilets and shipping is carbon neutral. Also, they explain WHY their toilet paper is wrapped here on their blog! Summary: they have to in order to keep the TP sanitary and this is the most eco-friendly way.

  • Note: Who Gives a Crap is a B-corporation. We love that. Read more about b-corporations here. Normal corporations have a goal to make more money for their owners. B-Corps do that too, but they also set specific, social and ethical goals such as governance, environment, and workers.

  • What’s Your Impact? Bamboo grows much faster than trees and require less water and other resources to grow before harvesting for production of toilet paper, thus making it more sustainable than the tree-based toilet paper.

The Good:

Made from 100% bamboo (which is much more sustainable than traditional tree-TP)

100% paper packaging

Very soft! 😍 Softer than How We Roll and Cloud Paper, which are already pretty soft

Tissue is 3-ply

Very reasonably priced, compares with Quilted Northern

Certified B corporation! We 💗 that

The Bad:

Bleached bamboo

We guess, maybe, it’s not the cheapest option, if we had to pick one ‘bad’? But it’s pretty close in price..

The Experience

Context: We have used Scott, Seventh Generation, Cottonelle, Charmin and just about every drugstore brand that exists. Seventh Generation was our recent staple until our voyage into bamboo and recycled paper during quarantine. We have tried our fair share of bamboo and recycled paper, including wrapped batch: Reel, Who Gives a Crap, bippy, and No.2. Check out the latest roundup of sustainable bamboo toilet paper here.

  • We like Who Gives a Crap Bamboo TP!

  • Softer than several bamboo toilet paper, Who Gives a Crap delivers a slightly softer tissue

  • No pilling! Strong!

  • The amount of TP on the roll is on the higher end of the range

  • The TP is whitened - but Who Gives a Crap uses chlorine dioxide which is used in drinking water

The Cost

One source suggests that the average person uses 100 rolls of toilet paper per year, so we are going to use that for cost comparison. We’ll compare mostly online brands which we’ve reviewed the past (and recently done a big bamboo toilet paper roundup of the best!), including Bippy, Go No. 2, Who Gives a Crap, PlantPaper, Better Way and Brandless. We compared WGAC to one drugstore brand, Quilted Northern.

Money Report: Who Gives a Crap Bamboo Toilet Paper is not bad when it comes to price! The roll is on the larger side, so we think you get more for your money, especially when buying the 48-pack. The larger pack also is priced below the average in our reseach.

Our Recommendation:

Did we mention that they were soft and strong too (and zero pilling)? Big win.

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
