ThinkSport Mineral Sunscreen Review 2021 | Mineral, reef-friendly sunscreen
The Top Line: MIXED BUY. ThinkSport 50+ SPF mineral sunscreen is a buy if kids are constantly in the water and you’re looking for an affordable reef-friendly mineral non-nano sunscreen. Otherwise we found the lack of blendability and white cast to be less than ideal - Pipette’s mineral sunscreen did a much better job there.
The Breakdown:
Cost & Products: $17.69 for 6 fl oz on Amazon
How ‘Clean’ Is This? Kid-friendly ingredients, reef-friendly natural sunscreen that uses 100% mineral, non-nano zinc oxide for broad spectrum UVA/UVB sun protection. The non-nano part is important — there are studies showing that very small nanoparticles (smaller than 35nm) of uncoated zinc oxide and uncoated titanium dioxide can be harmful to the environment by being toxic to marine life.
The ThinkSport 50+ SPF mineral sunscreen formula is highly biodegradable, non toxic. The first sunscreen to pass Whole Foods Premium Care requirements, Thinksport vegan, Leaping Bunny certified sun creams contain no PABA, parabens, phthalates, BPA, oxybenzone, avobenzone, petroleum, gluten, dairy, or toxic chemicals.
Packaging: Unfortunately does come in a plastic container.
Purchasing & Shipping: I purchased on Amazon.
Good to know: There is definitely a white cast :(
What’s Your Impact? The big thing here is the reef friendly, non-toxic ingredients. Chemicals commonly found in sunscreen cause permanent DNA damage to coral. Key here is to look for biologically toxic chemicals such as oxybenzone, paraben, phthalate, and avobenzone.
The Experience
Context: As an expecting mom, I have been on the hunt for the best mineral sunscreen and have tried a few (more reviews to come!). Most of the “top recommended” mineral sunscreens I have been able to find online from other articles have been very disappointing - I had almost given up on finding a good mineral sunscreen!
Not very blendable - this stuff takes a while to rub in! Even once it is rubbed in, it still has a bit of a white cast to it.
Great clean formula, which we appreciate - whole family can use it
No scent which we appreciate
I mostly used it for body, the texture is too thick for me to use on face (but I would be OK with using it on kids faces…)
Overall, while the product has great clean ingredients, it is definitely what you expect from a mineral sunscreen - white cast and hard to blend.
The Cost
We compared ThinkSport 50+ SPF mineral sunscreen with other Mineral SPFs on the market and found the price to be really reasonable (we were actually surprised — as we were prepared to pay more given how much we loved this product!).
Money Report: The price is very reasonable! Especially if your family are very active swimmers that will be going through tubes of this stuff.
The Good:
✔ Great affordable price, particularly great if your family are avid swimmers
✔ Unscented
✔ 100% mineral, non-nano zinc oxide that’s reef-friendly, free of oxybenzone and octinoxate (ingredients that can damage reefs and marine life)
✔ First sunscreen to pass Whole Foods Premium Care requirements
✔ Leaping Bunny certified sun creams contain no PABA, parabens, phthalates, BPA, oxybenzone, avobenzone, petroleum, gluten, dairy, or toxic chemicals
✔ Water resistent for up to 80 minutes in the pool or sea before the sunscreen should be re-applied
✔ Kid friendly
The Bad:
✗ Comes in a plastic bottle
✗ Not very blendable, leaves a faint white cast
