Fresh Labs Corn Floss Review 2020 | Vegan, Refillable, Plastic-Free Floss

The Top Line:

We loved everything about Fresh Lab’s Corn Floss: it is vegan, compostable, refillable. It doesn’t shred at all and it gets in between both our tight contact teeth and our slightly wider gaps. Sadly, it is the most expensive floss we have ever used, so on the basis alone, the floss is NOT a buy from us.

If you don’t mind spending an extra $20/year per person for the diligent flosser who wants a vegan, compostable floss, then we can’t recommend this enough.

The Breakdown:

  • Cost & Products: $6.99 for the glass + spool, $4.99 for just the refill

  • How ‘Clean’ Is This? Super clean - the product itself has no plastic.

  • Packaging: Kind of annoying that it came in a plastic wrapper...inside of a box.

  • Purchasing & Shipping: Amazon..

  • What’s Your Impact? No thick plastic case means less plastic overall. The floss itself is made of corn, so it’s compostable. And, because it’s not silk, it is 100% vegan.

The Experience

Context: Spent some time working in a dental office, so I’ve sampled the mainstream brands of floss like Oral B, Reach, and Glide. We’ve also tried Public Goods Floss, which we reviewed and loved. We did not get the case so can’t comment on it but it looks like the same exact container that was available at public goods.

  • This floss is awesome

  • It’s a bit like a nicer, waxy floss (so, not like Glide)

  • We thought it was really able to get in between teeth

  • Light mint scent and flavor

  • Did not shred at all

The Cost

We calculated based on using the recommended 18” of floss per use and assumed you flossed once every day! Each 30m floss would last you approx 67 days.

  • Public Goods Silk Floss
$2.50 glass case +1 spool; $5.50 for three refills. Yearly Cost: $10.70

  • Georganics Silk Floss
$7 glass case +1 spool; $9 for only two refills Yearly Cost: $27.14

  • Wowe Silk Floss
$10.64 glass case +2 spools; $10.64 for five refills. Yearly Cost: $18.03

  • Reach
$1.79 for one plastic floss. Annual Cost: $5.88

  • Glide
    $5.79 for a two-pack. Annual Cost $11.89

Money Report: Holy cow is this way more expensive than the other options. We really wish this vegan floss was at least half the price.

The Good:

It worked awesome on our tight contact teeth as well as more open spots

✔ Vegan, made of corn

Pleasant mint scent

✔ Compostable floss!

✔ One of our favorite flosses that we have ever used

The Bad:

✗ So, so expensive

Plastic inside packaging

Our Recommendation:
We can’t get over how much we enjoy flossing with Fresh Lab’s Corn Floss, If the extra cost is not bothersome to you, then we can’t recommend this floss highly enough. Unfortunately, the price point is insanely expensive for us, so we can’t in good faith recommend this option. NOT a buy.

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
