Blueland Toilet Cleaner Tablets | Eco-friendly, zero-waste toilet cleaner pods

We tried Blueland’s toilet cleaner tablets for 2 weeks, and here’s what we thought…

The Top Line: MOSTLY A BUY. We love Blueland’s commitment to zero plastic and it stays consistent with their Toilet Bowl Cleaner tablets— no plastic in packaging, no PVAs in the formula, no harmful ingredients. We also loved the scent and experience — it foamed up very nicely, and it is convenient to use tablets rather than liquid which can get messy. Of course, the tablet format also reduces carbon footprint from shipping — liquid is just so much heavier. Our only flag is that these toilet tablets are pricey. We break down just how pricey below — so it comes down to how much you use, how much you want to pay up for convenience and no PVA.

The Breakdown:

  • Cost & Products: $48 for 42 tablets, in you subscribe. Otherwise you can buy up to 84 tablets at at ime for $97.

  • How ‘Clean’ Is This? No harsh chemicals, harmful ingredients, VOCs or plastic packaging.

  • Packaging: The starter kit comes with a tin that you can refill. Refill pouches are compostable.

  • Purchasing & Shipping: We purchased on the Blueland website.

  • What’s Your Impact? It depends on how much toilet cleaner you are using - certainly this option removes the need for plastic packaging, as well as no chemicals in the formula.

The Experience

Context: We have tried various toilet cleaners but haven’t found a zero-waste option that actually cleans our toilet well. We have generally ended back up with Seventh Generation’s liquid toilet bowl cleaner.

  • We love just how zero-waste this product is - simple ingredient list of just 8 ingredients!

  • The tablet fizzes and bubbles up nicely in the toilet, we came back a few minutes later with the toilet bruch

  • We appreciate the convenience of a tablet — liquid can be so much messier

The Cost

We compared the cost of Blueland’s Toilet Bowl Cleaner tablets with a number of mainstream and ‘greener’ toilet cleaner options include Lysol, Chlorox, and Seventh Generation.

Money Report: Blueland’s Toilet Bowl Cleaner tablets is pricey when compared to other options, but you do benefit from more convenience (when compared to a liquid cleaner) and that its PVA-free (when compared to a toilet cleaner strip). Given some of its differentiators, it then comes down to your willingness to pay up, and perhaps how many toilets you have (and how often you clean them)😂!

The Good:

Simple ingredient list — just 8 ingredients!

EPA Safer Choice, Cradle to Cradle Certified™, Leaping Bunny (cruelty-free)

100% bio-based made without chlorine bleach, hydrochloric acid or cetrimonium chloride (CTAC)

Vegan, gluten-free, soy and nut-free

The Bad:

Pretty pricey to be using on a weekly basis

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
